In the Limelight with Barry: How a Former Police Commander Earned £70k in His First Year as a Sales Adviser

31st January 2023

Barry, a former Police Commander placed by Citrus Connect, smiling after building a successful £70k sales career with Secure Inheritance.

Welcome to another edition of In the Limelight, where we showcase real candidate journeys and success stories.

Today, we sit down with Barry, a retired Police Commander who was placed by Citrus Connect in February 2021 as an Adviser with Secure Inheritance Legal Services.

In his first year, Barry generated around £70,000 in commission income – earning up to £10,000 in a single month – all while enjoying complete control over his schedule and local territory. Here is his story in his own words.

“In my first year, whilst still learning the basics and finding my feet, I generated around £70k in commission income—all without having to work long hours week in and week out.”Barry, Estate Planning Adviser

Q: Barry, what is your background, and why did you decide to join Secure Inheritance?

Barry: My background is as a retired Police Commander. Early retirement was nice, but I was far too young and driven to sit still, so I decided to work for a mutual insurance company helping police officers in crisis. I was assisting families who had just lost an officer on duty; I was there for them, and I absolutely loved it.

Eventually, the company was taken over by a banking institution, and all of a sudden the focus shifted strictly to numbers and volume insurance sales. Even though I was a regional manager on a good salary with a company car, I made the decision to leave because I wasn’t comfortable with the change in company ethos.

Then I received a phone call from Leena Parmar at Citrus Connect Recruitment. She asked if I was looking for work, found out what my strengths, interests, and goals were, and suggested an opportunity with Secure Inheritance Legal Services.

Q: What was the interview process like, and what appealed to you most about the opportunity?

Barry: I scheduled a telephone interview with Managing Director Andrew Stock, knowing deep down that if it was just a pushy sales role, I wouldn’t be interested. We chatted for a good half an hour. I appreciated that Andrew asked what I wanted from the opportunity and showed me clear, real-world earnings of existing advisers.

What appealed to me most was that it wasn’t about hard-selling. The approach is entirely client-centric—helping families achieve the legal outcome they want, and by default, the financial rewards follow. I walked away from a significant salary elsewhere because Secure Inheritance focused on what mattered to the client.

I also loved the idea of no commuting, setting my own diary, working in my local community, and helping families secure their assets for future generations.

Q: Did you have any concerns about lead generation when transitioning to a self-employed role?

Barry: My only niggling concern was that I would have to generate leads myself, as I had never done anything like that before.

However, once I got started, I realised my concerns were unnecessary. Leads have not been an issue at all—the company’s marketing training is well-proven and effective. Working under the Secure Inheritance umbrella, I don’t need dozens of appointments to make a great living, and quality referrals from satisfied clients are constantly coming in.

Q: How was the onboarding training and ongoing management support?

Barry: The initial 5-day training was comprehensive and modular, presented by very experienced senior management. The regular follow-up training sessions and continuous support have been of an excellent standard.

The company culture is mutually supportive, creating a true professional community where advisers exchange ideas freely. Head Office staff, the legal team, and Andrew himself are always approachable and helpful.

Q: What has your income potential looked like since making the transition?

Barry: The quality and range of legal services have been a catalyst for my earnings. Some months, I have earned £10,000. In my first year, while still finding my feet, I generated around £70,000 in commission income without having to work long hours week in, week out.

There is no cap on what I can earn, and I love being rewarded directly for a job well done.

Q: Beyond the financial success, what has been the most rewarding part of this career change?

Barry: While I appreciate the income, I cherish the freedom this business gives me to fit work around my life, like going on cruises and taking holidays with my partner.

Finally, the reward that is priceless to me is hearing clients tell me (and share on Trustpilot) how relieved and secure they feel knowing their family’s future is taken care of. That feeling of professional value is deeply rewarding.
